The Gold Bar of Christopher Folk chapter 7
‘I don’t want to drink ever again.’
I’m afraid. I’m really really afraid. Afraid for my life. Afraid for my dignity. Simply afraid. The worst part is that I have no idea what I’m supposed to do with it now. Maybe I should get up from the floor first, that might help.
“Good morning Night Fish. How was your sleep last night?”
I looked to my right and saw Vince standing at his usual spot behind the counter and cleaning some shot glasses.
“You never go home?” I asked, still feeling a little bit dizzy.
“My wife is in Florida visiting her parents and my daughter is college. I have no reason to go back home” said Vince. “Are you feeling well, Sean?”
“My head is killing me and I think I been poisoned. What was in that drink?”
“Water with some vodka” said Vince. “And also some anesthetic, so you won’t resist for the mark.”
“Did you just say anesthetic? And what mark are you talking about?”
“Look at your right hand kid.”
And then I felt a heart attack. Right there, on the back of my right hand, was the mark. A big black eye was staring at me now. I don’t have the mental strength to deal with this.
“Looks nice, right?” asked Vince and then lifted up his left sleeve to reveal his own black eye that was on his left arm. “Every person that Chris cares about got that mark. If you don’t like it, just remember that it could have been worse. It could be a penis.”
“You know what, I like. I even love it. Who care if cult leader marked me? This is an awesome tattoo!!”
“That’s the spirit, boy!” said Vince with a smile. “Now take out the trash. Remember, you still work here even if you are in denial.”
“Right, work” I said, taking the big trash bag out of Vince’s hand.
‘Go with the flow. Maybe that the solution’ I thought as i got out through the back door. ‘Let’s face the facts. This place is full of crazy people. And they are probably in a cult. Just go with the flow, Sean. That the best option you got and what the fuck she is doing?’
I was about to go back inside, but something caught my eye. That something was a girl. A weird one and she looked about my age. She had a long jet black hair that reach pass her Shoulders. She wore a red loose shirt that didn’t fear to reveal her black bra, long jeans and white Snickers. It looked like she was trying to hide behind the big garbage can. She looked really ridiculous now. You can’t call it hiding if half of her body is visible.
“What are you doing?” I asked the girl. “If you are playing hide and seek, you are going to lose.”
“Shut up” was the girl said.
“Shut up. I don’t want him to find out I’m here” said the girl. “And who are you?”
“Who are you? Who is he?” I asked. “What the fuck is going on?”
“Just tell me if he is here or not!!” Yelled the angry girl.
“Then just tell me who the fuck is he!!!!” I yelled back.
“She is talking about me. Don’t you, Tracy?”
“Shit” whispered the girl before getting up from the dirty ground. And with his smile, Chris Folk appeared. He was dressed in the same blue overall and black shirt he wore the first time we met. He was also holding a fishing rod in one hand and a bucket full of colorful fish.
“Watch your language, young lady” said Chris. “Would you mind telling me why you didn’t come back home last night?”
“I was with my friends, Chris. That something people do sometimes instead of fishing and hanging out with a bunch of drunken people” said Tracy, the girl with the attitude and then turned to look at me. “What are you looking at , weirdo?”
“Be nice to the new cleaning boy, Tracy. He lives with us now.”
“What the fuck?!! you letting stranger live here now?!” yelled Tracy.” you know what? I don’t want to deal with you now. I’m going to my room.”
“Good, and don’t leave it till you are twenty one” said Chris angrily as Tracy entered the building, slamming the door behind her.
“That was totally weird” I said.
“I’m sorry about that. My little sister is hard to deal with.”
“That was your sister?” I asked. I assumed they were related, but a brother and sister? Chris is crazy but nice, and she seems to be a bitch.
“Yes” answered Chris. “I bet you are hungry. Why don’t we go back inside and I’ll make some breakfast?”
“Sounds nice” I said, feeling my stomach growling.
“Great, let’s go” said Chris happily. “By the way, don’t think that i didn’t notice how you looked at her. I sister is off limit for spoiled brats.”
“Believe me, she is last person I think I will want to date.”
“How dare you insulting your boss’s little sister?!!! You teenagers have no respect!!”
‘Wow,this family is crazy.’
